The journey of Hinduism is not as long as the establishment of Hindu Girls College (HGC). HGC was opened to give opportunity to girls of Hindu community mostly and others from Indian Diaspora to have access to education after the second world war. The founders of HGC encouraged girls to attend school and to be good in academic subjects but also to have cultural and religious knowledge as well wrapped in Human Values. HGC to a certain extent had as principal goal to make the girls become custodians of Values, Indian Culture and Traditions.  That’s how subjects like dance, vocal, Tamil language and Hinduism were inserted in the school curriculum.

Hinduism started officially to be taught in 1985. Young girls were provided both academic and spiritual knowledge. Hinduism main axis rests on values which lead to an ethical way of life. The learners were acquainted to Universal Values like truth, non-violence, equality, tolerance, respect and compassion. As future mothers, the girls were equipped with good ethical values of Love, Endurance, Perseverance and Patience to enable them to follow the path of goodness.

In its 36 years of existence many educators came and left. Dr Dabeedass P was the first teacher. He started to teach Hinduism in upper classes- grade 10 to grade 13. In 1991 Hinduism was introduced in grade 9 and one year later in grades 7 and 8.  And in 1994 Hinduism was taught in full swing in all grades. At Higher School Certificate level Hinduism was taught at both principal and subsidiary level.

Many other educators came for fewer years and contributed to the teaching and good result of the subject at Cambridge level. They are to be honored for their contribution.

From year 1985 till 2017 we had only two educators in the Hinduism Department. Both educators accepted to work above the required loads as prescribed by PSSA in those time with the intention to keep alive the subject and to maintain the good standard of the teaching. In 2017, with the support of Mrs A.Gungadin , ex-rector of HGC then a third educator integrated the department.

Our sincere wish is that our girls continue to be educated and become the ambassadors of Values and Ethical Teachings and make themselves proud to have been students of the Hindu Girls College while carrying the flag of the school very high, they become good Human Beings.
